Kansas:
There are seven types of child care regulations in Kansas. Center-based programs may receive a child care center, preschool, parent day out or school age program license. Family child care providers may be a licensed family child care home, licensed group family child care home or a registered family child care home.

Licensed child care programs have been inspected and found to meet basic, minimum health and safety standards. These programs receive at least one inspection per year. All center-based child care programs must be licensed.

Registered applies to family child care providers who care for six or fewer children and promise to meet minimum health and safety requirements. They receive no annual visit by the health department unless a complaint is filed.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment contracts with local county health departments to regulate licensed and registered child care in the state of Kansas.

Missouri:
Child Care programs may be licensed, license-exempt or exempt in the state of Missouri.

Licensed child care programs have been inspected and found to meet basic, minimum health and safety standards. The following types of programs must be licensed:
  • Child care centers
  • Group family child care homes
  • Family homes caring for five or more unrelated children
  • Head Start sites
License-Exempt child care programs do not have to be licensed, but they are required to have a fire safety and health and sanitation inspection each year. The following programs may be license-exempt:
  • Child care programs that operate under a religious organization
  • Nursery schools that operate no more than four hours per child, per day and are not operated under the control of a religious organization.
Exempt child care programs do not have any regulations or inspections. The following types of programs may be exempt:
  • Child care programs operated by a school system
  • Religious organization academic preschools for 4 and 5 year olds
  • Family child care homes caring for four or fewer children not related to the provider
The Missouri Department of Health Bureau of Child Care is the agency that oversees licensed and license-exempt child care facilities in the state of Missouri.
